Kolkata: The Indian Institute of Science (IISc) Bengaluru is the sole Indian institution to be ranked 99th among the top 100 universities worldwide for computer science according to the Times Higher Education World University Rankings by Subject 2025. This represents a significant advancement for Indian higher education. In the previous year's rankings, IISc was the highest-ranked Indian university, placing within the 251-300 band. Delhi University (DU) is the only Indian university to be recognized among the top universities for both law and psychology.

Key Highlights

  • Increased Presence in Computer Science: India now boasts 53 universities ranked in the top global computer science institutions, a rise from 47 in 2024. IISc Bangalore has secured a commendable 96th position.
  • Global Leaders in Computer Science: Oxford University leads the rankings, followed by the University of Cambridge and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
  • Growth in Business and Economics: Indian higher education institutions have significantly increased their presence in the top universities list for business and economics, with 24 institutions featured this year compared to 15 in 2024.
  • Notable Performers in Business and Economics: Amity University Noida, KIIT University Bhubaneswar, UPES Dehradun, and Delhi University have achieved a rank band of 401-500 in the business and economics rankings.
  • Top Performer in Medical and Health: Saveetha Institute of Medical and Technical Sciences in Chennai, ranked in the 251-300 band, leads the list of 28 Indian institutions recognized for excellence in medical and health subjects.
  • Improved Performance in Arts and Humanities: Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) and Delhi University (DU) have shown improvement in their arts and humanities rankings, moving from the 501-600 band to the 401-500 band this year.
  • Jadavpur University's Debut: Jadavpur University in West Bengal has made its debut in the rankings, achieving a position in the 601+ band for arts and humanities.
  • Consistent Performance in Social Sciences: 14 Indian universities have maintained their positions among the world's top institutions for social sciences in 2025, mirroring their performance in the previous year.
  • MIT and Stanford Dominate: Both the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Stanford University, both in the United States, achieved top three positions in 11 separate subject rankings.
